In the 1960s, a young man from Castrelo de Miño called Obdulio Villanueva Blanco decided to start a winemaking tradition that continues to this day. Supported by the good reviews he received about his wine, in September 1961 he decided to start selling it to his neighbours and friends. With the experience acquired and the incipient push of the Denominations of Origin (D.O.), in April 1975 the first commercial brand with D.O. Ribeiro was launched on the market: Viña Senra. Likewise, on December 25, 1988, Carlos Villanueva Senra (son of Obdulio Villanueva) founded Bodegas Villanueva Senra. During the 1990s, the company continued to grow. In 1995 the Villanueva family acquired a country house at the entrance to Salvaterra de Miño, Pazo As Barreiras. In December 1998 the winery was founded, within the D.O. Rías Baixas.
