Wine & Gourmet Japan, a gateway to the Japanese market

From April 12th to 14th, Wine & Gourmet will be held in Tokyo, the only trade fair in Japan focused on wines, beers, spirits, and gourmet products. After twelve editions, the event combines the traditional fair with a full program that includes seminars, tastings, wine pairing sessions, round tables, and much more.

Undeniably, the Japanese market is one of the most important in the wine segment worldwide. Its production is scarce, so imports account for more than 80% of the wine consumed in the country. Regarding still wine, 156,141 kiloliters of wine were imported in 2021 for a value of 844 million euros. Among these imports, Spain ranks fourth in volume (12.5% of the total) and fifth in value (5.9% of the total). These positions could improve in the coming years as Spain has been the country with the highest growth among the top five.

The position of our country improves if we talk about sparkling wines, where Spain ranks second with 32.4% of imports). Spanish wine in general, and cava in particular, are well known in Japan due to the large number of Spanish restaurants.

In terms of consumption trends, various segments of the population have been identified, with the 55+ age group standing out as the main market segment. There is also a great concern for health and a notorious appreciation for quality products.

Despite the existing opportunities, this is a very competitive and demanding market that requires patience and perseverance. In this sense, it is essential to make trips to the country to attend events such as Wine & Gourmet and to resume contact with importers and distributors after the years of pandemic.
